Orthophosphoric acid 37% used for 15 to 30 seconds is the most efficient medium used to condition enamel and / or dentin.
Its use in dentin promotes the rapid and complete removal of the smear layer, with the consequent opening of the tubule ends, allowing the resin to penetrate more easily; and the fact that calcium and phosphate ions present in dentin and dentin fluids are able to combine with ortho-phosphoric acid, neutralizing its toxic effect on dentin.
This promotes increased micromechanical retention and decreases marginal microleakage.
